Joe Woodie

MMS Band Director

For Joe Woodie, percussion is his career and his passion. A graduate of Bowling Green State University with a bachelor’s of music degree, Joe began as a band director at Mason Middle School in 2021. Prior to that, Joe was the percussion specialist at William Mason High School from 2016-2021  for all six concert bands and for the marching band.

Joe marched with both the Bluecoats and with Rhythm X Indoor Percussion Ensemble and now serves as a battery instructor for both ensembles. In August, Joe was a part of the staff that guided the Bluecoats to win the 2016 DCI World Class Championships. He has also worked as a battery instructor for many area high schools, including Northmont, Findlay, Miamisburg, Sycamore, and Centerville.

Joe believes music is a subject uniquely bound to emotion and has discovered that creating an emotional connection between his students’ individual experiences and the music they are performing is a powerful tool as a music educator. Teaching also provides the opportunity for Joe to guide the individual character development in each student through music.

Joe has been inspired by the work of Claude Debussy, Igor Stavinsky, Paul Hindemith, and Frederic Chopin, and is especially grateful to his parents for providing support and inspiration as he pursued his love of music. When Joe isn’t teaching or playing music, he appreciates time to exercise, socialize, and compose percussive/electronic music.
