Bowling Green Travel Update

We can’t wait to see our hard-working students perform on Saturday at Bowling Green. Students arrive at MHS at 7:45 am on Saturday morning. They will have a breakfast snack on the bus. The band will be providing snacks, dinner and pizza following the finals performance. Students will return to the high school at approximately 3:30 am Sunday morning.

For spectators, Mason’s preliminary performance is at 2pm. General Admission tickets are available at the Bowling Green stadium for purchase.  Members of our booster board will be in the stadium with spirit gear hosting a Mason cheering section.  You are welcome to join them throughout the day. When we learn the results of the preliminary competition about 5:30, we will share an updated to everyone via remind and social media. Stay turned for the evening schedule at that time.

Any travel questions, please contact Mindy Patton

Bowling Green Travel Check List

—Travel wearing layers.  This includes the clothes you will wear under your uniform (for marchers think about your black socks, black bottoms and top).  Students will be changing into their uniforms at a rest stop just south of Bowling Green.

—Warm Clothes for rehearsal and on the bus.  It’s expected to be in the 40s-60s during our travel day on Saturday.  Please make sure every student has a jacket/sweatshirt with them on the trip.

—Full rehearsal jug of water.   Students should take this on the bus with them to hydrate throughout the day.   The Band will have water bottles for meals and when students don’t have access to their water jug.

—Packed lunch to eat on the bus.   All students will be eating lunch on the bus on the way to the preliminary performance.  Please pack a lunch and healthy snacks!

—Cell phone/charger for use on the bus.   Students may use their devices on the bus.  They also may bring a blanket/pillow for the ride.

Bowling Green Maps

Below is an area map, as well as a parking map for this weekend.

Travel Waivers

Travel waivers were due Friday for students not riding home on the bus.  For students who turned in a waiver, you should have received an email from Medical Secretary Lisa Oldham with instructions.   Students will be released at the buses at the conclusion of the day.    You will receive communication about exact location on Saturday.    Please direct questions to Lisa:

Travel Food Survey

Travel Food Survey was due Saturday.  If your student did not complete, please do so today before we place our order tomorrow.  This includes information for both Bowling Green and Indianapolis meal.

With the goal of looking completely uniform on the field, following is a list of key things EVERY marcher needs to know and do in preparation for competition - our band is judged on uniformity which includes what we wear.

All marchers must have at least 2 pair of LONG black socks in their uniform bag at all times. There are many students that do not have socks. Please check with your student to make sure they bring long, solid black socks to school in a large ziplock bag labeled with their name. U crew will place a tub in the band room where socks can be dropped-off. Uniform racks will also be accessible on Monday and Thursday evenings during rehearsal.

Marchers must wear proper undergarments under their uniforms, this includes a sleeveless form-fitting shirt or camisole (a bra is not considered a proper undergarment when changing publicly), along with form fitting shorts, compression shorts or leggings.

To appear uniform on the field marchers do not wear make-up, jewelry or nail polish when in uniform. Students are welcome to wear foundation make-up, but will be given make-up wipes if they wear blush, eyeliner, mascara and lipstick. No jewelry includes watches, nose rings and gauges. Nail polish wipes are also available prior to taking the field.

Also part of looking uniform on the field is making sure long hair is completely contained inside the shako (this rule does not apply to front ensemble and sousaphone players). Hair must remain off the collar throughout the performance and gentleman must be clean-shaven. If you need help getting your hair up and into the shako, your section leaders and U Crew leaders can help.

There is NO eating while in uniform. If we have limited time between performances and students are permitted to eat in uniform students must remove berets, shakos, gloves, gauntlets and vests before doing so. Please wash hands prior to returning to uniform.

Medication Reminder for Bowling Green

OTC Medication

We encourage parents/guardians to provide access to our central supply of 3 typical OTC medications if your student has ever needed one of these medications in the past: ibuprofen, acetaminophen, benadryl. Please see links below to partially filled DMS forms. These forms require both a parent and doctor’s signature and can be submitted via email to You can check the status of your student’s access to central medication in Charms in the “Central OTC” field on the student profile.

As-Needed or Scheduled Medication

If your student takes medication that is not centrally provided, you must submit DMS form(s) and the associated medication(s). If you need to drop off forms/medication prior to our trip to Bowling Green, please sign up in Charms for an appointment during rehearsal on Monday Sept 24th. Below is a link to a blank DMS form.

If you have any questions, please send an email to Lisa Oldham at

Board Positions

We are currently seeking Boosters who are interested in running for a position on our 2019 Board. If you are interested in a Mason Band Boosters Board position, or would like to nominate someone to run for a board position, please contact Bob Johnson at

Charms: Student Email Address Update Needed

Parents/Students, please check your student’s email address in Charms for accuracy. We want to make sure that all students are receiving our Charms emails to keep everyone up-to-date. We have many students who still have their “old” Mason City Schools email addresses listed in Charms.

If your student is using a MCS provided email address for band communication, you will need to update their email address to their new one that MCS assigned them over the summer. The new assigned school email address now includes a number along with their name. Please double check that your student’s email is current so they will continue to receive band communication. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

New Years Eve Fundraising Questionnaire

Mason Bands has the opportunity to partner with Basils on Market to create a fun filled evening to celebrate with friends and neighbors.  This would be an opportunity to raise funds for the program with minimal volunteer effort, and a way to invite the entire community. As we continue to pursue new ways for our boosters to connect and also ways to raise funds, your feedback and ideas are important.  Please take a moment to share your perspective.

Spirit Wear: Don't miss out!
