Fine Arts Festival Needs Band Parents!

As the parents of students who are involved in our district's fine arts program, many of you have probably attended the Fine Arts Festival...a celebration of the many talented students we have here in Mason. Proceeds from this event benefit all the fine arts in the district, including our band program.

This year's Fine Arts Festival is coming up on Friday, February 24, in the MHS Large Commons. Many of your kids will be performing in some way, so hopefully you are planning to attend!

Volunteers are needed for this event, and band parents are being asked to staff the kitchen area. No cooking is necessary...just making sure the serving area remains organized!

Right now, FIVE volunteers are needed for the 4:30 pm to 6:30 shift. TEN volunteers are needed for the 6:15 pm to 8:15 pm shift.

As our district's largest organization, we'd love to see the band well-represented at the Fine Arts Festival! Please contact Lisa Miller at lisamiller66@embarqmail.com to volunteer for a shift. If your child is participating in the event, we'll make sure we have plenty of volunteers to cover for you so that you don't miss seeing the performance!

Eat at Culver's on Thursday!

Our next Dine and Donate event is this Thursday, February 16, at Culver's! Stop in anytime between 10:00 am and 10:00 pm, present the flyer (see the link below), and Culver's will donate 10% of your order back to the band program.

Pizza Day and Booster Meeting This Week!

Just a reminder about two events this week:

Tuesday, February 7 -- Mason Band Pizza Day at Aponte's! You all know how this works! Aponte's will donate 20% of your order back to the Mason Band program...just remember to mention that you are with the Mason Band!

Wednesday, February 8 -- Monthly Booster Meeting! We'll meet in the MHS Band Room at 7:30 pm. We'd love to see you there!

A Few Reminders

NO Booster Meeting on Thursday! This Thursday is the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concert to benefit the MHS Orchestra program (ticket info is on the home page of masonbands.com). Since many of our band parents will be attending and supporting our Orchestra program--and since our facilities will be very busy that night--we will not have our February Booster meeting on Thursday. February is a busy month at MHS, so we're trying to find a date for this meeting that doesn't conflict with something else...we'll keep you posted!

Mason Band Discount Cards -- Our Symphonic and Wind Symphony band students who are traveling to Chicago in March to perform at Orchestra Hall are selling Discount Cards to defray the cost of renting the venue (yes, we have to rent the hall!). Each card is $10 and includes great discounts at local businesses, including Aponte's, Penn Station, Skyline, and Brazenhead...Cincinnati Team Apparel, the business that provides our band spirit wear, has included a one-time 25% discount (up to $25)! Operation Thank You--Update!

Remember our service project coordinated with Operation: Thank You during band camp last August? We sent 76 "care packages" filled with donated goodies and letters written by band members to three military units in Iraq and Afghanistan! We also were honored to have two local military veterans, Adam Clark and Tim Campbell, talk with students during our packing event.

We DID hear back from the troops that our boxes arrived at their destinations! The Band even received a "mission flag" as a thank you, and it is now hanging in the Band Room! Below is the email from SSgt Boling who sent the flag:

The boxes I did receive from Mason High School. I got a total of 26 boxes and I gifted them out to all the soldiers I work with. In thanks I had a flag flown on a combat mission and sent back to the person's name on the return receipt. I hope that the flag made it thru the mail. I sent it about a month or so ago. There would be a certificate with a picture that has my name, a CW5 French and a Captain Stockton on it. I will say that it totally made everyone's day. All the packages were awesome, and everyone had a blast opening them, there was a xmas atmosphere around here for a few days :P I even posted some of the letters up around the office, and they are a hit with everyone.

If you can find out if the flag made it back, then I'd really appreciate it. If they want a speaker, I would be more than happy to visit the school and thank all the kids in person when I return.

I am amazed by the report of all you donated to be sent to the troops. I hope y'all realize just how much support such as yours means to our troops. Many get the idea that the American people do not know or what is worse, care about them and the sacrifices they are making daily. Care packages from groups such as yours really blows that idea out of the water and really shows them we DO know and that we DO care about them and appreciate their sacrifices. When these boxes arrive YOU will have brightened the day of so many and help to give their life purpose.

I appreciate you choosing Operation: Thank You to be the organization to work with and the support you have given to our troops. We do appreciate seeing the young people of today sharing and giving of themselves.
