How did the Mason High School Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice!
On March 1, 124 students MHS band members, along with their directors and parent chaperones, headed to New York City as one of two schools selected to participate in The Best of the Midwest concert at Carnegie Hall. The group's itinerary in NYC included tours of famous performance venues, such as Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Metropolitan Opera House. The trip, paid for my band members and their families and through fundraising efforts, also included a concert for students at Baldwin High School in New York.
Students toured Carnegie Hall on the morning of their March 4 concert and got their first glimpse of Stern Auditorium where they performed that evening. Nearly 400 family members and friends made the trip to NYC to watch the two bands perform eight pieces in front of a capacity crowd. MHS Band Directors Bob Bass, Micah Ewing, and Avious Jackson conducted, along with world-renowned James F. Keene as guest conductor.
"This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to perform in the premier hall in the world!" shared Bass. Band members agreed that the acoustics and the venue were second to none. "From the first note I played on Perelman Stage, I could tell I sounded my absolute best, and I was experiencing something unique," shared Caitlin Marquart, a MHS junior who plays the tenor saxophone.
