The Wind Symphony features the finest musicians in the Mason band program. The
“honors” component of Wind Symphony was established in 2003 by the Mason City
School District. The Wind Symphony meets all three trimesters and is populated
by mostly 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. A small number of 9th grade
students may be invited to enroll in this band with the requirement that they
also participate in marching band during their 9th grade year. The Wind Symphony
performs the finest wind literature and continues the development of refined,
professional skills. Wind Symphony will perform four school concerts a year and
participates in outside musical opportunities when they present themselves. The
Wind Symphony has performed at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra
Clinic, The National Concert Band Festival, Ohio Music Education Association
State Conventions, and at various colleges such as Bowling Green State
University, University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music, and
Northern Kentucky University. 11th and 12th grade students receive honors credit
for participation in this class. The requirements for the honors credit include
studying private lessons, professional concert critiques, 10 hours of community
service, and participation in district solo and ensemble and honor band events.
Student in all of the concert bands are part of the basketball pep band which
requires attendance at two basketball games of the students’ choosing during the
basketball season.
